Samantha Gaul

Samantha Gaul is a permanent member of the ensemble at the Oper Leipzig, where she regularly appears in roles such as Pamina (The Magic Flute), Musetta (La Bohème), Gretel (Hansel and Gretel), Ännchen (Der Freischütz), and Zerlina (Don Giovanni). In the 2024/25 season, she will make her debut as Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier), take on the role of the Waldvogel (Siegfried), and debut in new productions as Oriane in Amadis de Gaule and Madama Cortese in Il Viaggio a Reims.

With the Budapest Festival Orchestra under Iván Fischer, she will once again perform as Naiad (Ariadne on Naxos) at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall in Budapest, the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, and the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza. In November of the 2024/25 season, Samantha Gaul will sing the role of Adele (Die Fledermaus) for the first time at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing.

The award-winning soprano has a close artistic collaboration with the lieder pianist Götz Payer, with whom she will appear at the “Liedertal” Festival in the Historische Stadthalle Wuppertal.

Her recent concert successes include engagements with the Thomanerchor and the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig under Andreas Reize, where she performed the soprano part in Haydn’s The Creation at the Berlin Philharmonie, the Kulturpalast Dresden, and Thomaskirche in Leipzig.

Numerous guest engagements have taken Samantha Gaul to prestigious venues, including the Komische Oper Berlin (Nannetta), Theater Basel (Augusta Leigh), Staatstheater Darmstadt (Flora, Linfea), Konzerttheater Bern (Musetta), as well as the Oper Frankfurt and the Opéra National de Montpellier (Naiad). At the Staatstheater Augsburg, she excelled in roles such as Sophie Scholl (The White Rose), the title role in Hartmann’s Simplicius Simplicissimus, Serpetta (La Finta Giardiniera), and Adina (L’elisir d’amore).

She has also made her debut at the Munich Biennale for Contemporary Music Theatre, the Schwetzingen SWR Festival, the Rheingau Musik Festival, and the Weilburger Schlosskonzerte, and presented a lieder recital at Villa Wahnfried in Bayreuth.

A passionate concert and lieder singer, Samantha Gaul was thrilled to make her debut at the Schubertiade Hohenems in spring 2022 with pianist Kit Armstrong, where they premiered songs set to poems by Ulla Hahn. The highly acclaimed soprano also made her debut at the Philharmonie Luxembourg with Mahler’s 4th Symphony under Carlo Rizzari.

From 2018 to 2022, Samantha Gaul was a permanent ensemble member at Theater Freiburg, where she performed key roles in her repertoire, including Susanna (The Marriage of Figaro), Nannetta (Falstaff), Adele (Die Fledermaus), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Musetta (La Bohème), Olympia (The Tales of Hoffmann), and the title role in the German premiere of Mark Anthony Turnage’s Coraline. She earned special acclaim for her portrayal of the title role in Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen, which she also recorded for a CD production with NAXOS and SWR.

In 2018, Samantha Gaul was nominated as Young Artist of the Year by Opernwelt magazine.
